Split a PDF by Bookmarks
Turn each bookmarked chapter into its own file.
How it works
- Upload your PDF.
- The tool reads its existing top-level bookmarks.
- Preview the files it will create, one per bookmark.
- Download them individually or as a ZIP.
Which bookmarks does this use?
The PDF's existing top-level outline (table of contents) entries — each one's page becomes the start of a new file.
What if my PDF uses links to named destinations instead of direct page bookmarks?
Those are skipped on a best-effort basis — this tool resolves the common direct-page-reference style of bookmark, not every possible PDF destination type.
What happens to pages before the first bookmark?
They're included in the first split file, since there's no earlier bookmark to start a new section.
Are the split files named after the bookmarks?
Yes — each output file is named using its corresponding bookmark's title, made safe for use as a filename.
What if my PDF has no bookmarks at all?
You'll see a message that none were found — use Split PDF instead if you want to split by page count or file size rather than by bookmarks.
Does it handle nested bookmarks, like sub-chapters under a chapter?
No — only the top-level entries in the outline are used. If a chapter has sub-bookmarks nested underneath it, those sub-sections aren't split out on their own; they just stay bundled inside that chapter's file along with everything else in its page range.
My PDF doesn't have bookmarks — can I add some first?
Yes — use Add Bookmarks to PDF to mark where each chapter starts, then come back here to split on them.
